Great Scenes in Cinema #3-GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS-Always Be Closing

GGR

Quick! Think of the greatest example in film history of an actor stealing a film in one scene. On the short list of answers should be Alec Baldwin’s classic 6 minute scene from GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS. Baldwin is performing against powerhouse talent including the late Jack Lemmon and Ed Harris but more than holds his own in this scene. It is his only scene in the film and though the film is based on a play this scene did not originally appear in the play. It was written specifically for the film and for Baldwin. To say that Baldwin knocks it out of the park is an understatement. It takes a special talent to take control and hold the screen like he does here. Although I enjoyed his performances on the hit show 30 ROCK and his SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE appearances, this is Alec Baldwin’s finest performance. The sound you hear at the end of the scene is Baldwin dropping the mic!
