Quick Take-Chloë Grace Moretz Takes on Aliens in THE 5TH WAVE

5thwave
In the new film The 5th Wave, four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated.  Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie (Chloë Grace Moretz) is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother.  As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope – if she can only trust him.

Like most filmgoers Chloë Moretz came into my radar based on her performance as the foul mouthed Hit Girl in 2010’s KICK-ASS. She followed up that performance with another good role as Abby in the criminally unseen teen vampire film LET ME IN. Both films were released in 2010 and show how much range she has as an actress. While her role in KICK-ASS was more extroverted her role in LET ME IN show her more introverted. Even a good actress can appear in bad films like the unnecessary remake of CARRIE, the disappointing sequel KICK-ASS 2 and the awful IF I STAY. Those films show Moretz doing what she can to save the material but is hampered by a terrible script and even worse direction. She has the potential to be an effective leading actress if she is able to find a film that equals her talents.
The trailer for her latest film shows Moretz featured in another film that seems to be more interested in special effects and spectacle. It looks like a retread of THE HUNGER GAMES and DIVERGENT covering the strong female is the savior of humanity themes of those films. The film is also based on a young adult novel of the same name and should bring those readers to theaters. This could lead to box office gold but not much acclaim for her acting. She deserves much better.
